The Origin Story
Where Time Slows Down and the Soul Finds Its Way Home
Perched along the quiet, winding banks of the Chestatee River, nestled deep in the ancient Appalachian foothills, Riverstone Cottage has a story as rich and layered as the North Georgia soil beneath it. Built by hand over 40 years ago as a modest fishing and hunting camp, the cottage was originally conceived as a wilderness retreat—a place for outdoorsmen and nature lovers to find solace in the whisper of pines and the rush of river water carving through granite and gold.

Long before the first stone was laid or the first timber sawed, these woods were the sacred hunting grounds of the Cherokee. For generations, they roamed the Chestatee valley, whose name in Cherokee loosely translates to “place of lights” or “pine torch place,” referencing the way torches once flickered through the forest during night hunts. The land was revered not just for its bounty—deer, trout, wild herbs—but for its spiritual energy. The river was believed to carry healing properties, a life-force that connected the people to nature and each other.

Then came the Gold Rush of 1828. Dahlonega became the site of America’s first major gold strike, a moment that would forever change the landscape. Miners and fortune-seekers flooded the region, carving rough trails through the mountains, some of which still remain today, now overgrown and silent. While the gold eventually faded, Dahlonega’s heart never stopped beating—it simply found a different rhythm, one that pulsed in step with the land’s deeper, quieter magic.

Fast forward to the early 1980s: A local craftsman with a love for wild places and solitude built Riverstone Cottage as a private retreat, using reclaimed wood and stone from the surrounding forest. No blueprints, just intuition and reverence. At its center, he placed a wood-burning stove—sturdy, black, and iron-willed—to serve as both hearth and anchor. Over the years, generations gathered around it: telling stories, drying boots, and warming their bones after long days of fishing, hunting, or simply sitting in awe of the river’s rhythm.

When new stewards took ownership of the cottage years later, they made a promise—to preserve its soul.

While the exterior and bones of the cabin remain unchanged, a gentle transformation has taken place inside. Rustic charm now meets refined taste. The walls feature a curated collection of contemporary artwork, the kind that invites conversation and contemplation. High-speed fiber optic internet has been seamlessly integrated, allowing remote workers to trade office cubicles for river views without sacrificing connectivity. Cozy furniture, high-thread-count linens, and chef-worthy kitchen essentials elevate the experience, while still allowing nature to take center stage. And yet, it’s not the upgrades that guests remember—it’s the feeling.

Riverstone Cottage is more than a place to stay. It’s a return. To quiet. To slowness. To mornings with coffee on the porch as fog lifts off the river like breath from the earth. To stargazing free from city light. To the mystery of hearing owls call or catching a glimpse of a fox at dusk. To remembering that peace isn’t something you find; it’s something you feel when you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.
For over four decades, couples have fallen in love here. Families have reconnected. Writers have drafted novels. Fly fishers have stood in silent communion with the water. And weary travelers have found what they didn’t know they were searching for: themselves.
Riverstone Cottage is not just a cabin—it’s a sanctuary. Rooted in history. Shaped by nature. Designed for those seeking not just escape, but renewal.

Welcome to Riverstone. Where the past lingers, the present calms, and the future waits quietly, just down the trail.

"From the moment we pulled up, we knew this stay would be really special. The setting is simply stunning on the banks of the creek… The cabin is perfectly decorated in a tasteful and homey way. We spent our first night out by the fire pit, talking and laughing and listening to music. We thought we would have to drive to hike, but we didn’t. We could hike right there on the property. Our dogs loved jumping in the creek."

"Five Stars! This was by far the best Airbnbs I have rented. The cabin was super clean and so cozy. The cabin was decorated so nicely and was well equipped. My family of 4 felt comfortable and we had plenty of things to do at this property. We enjoyed the river for sure. We went kayaking, swimming, and fishing in the river followed by s’more’s making in the beautiful fire pit. The hiking trail and secret waterfall was an added bonus. The area is so beautiful and peaceful. Above all, the owners were extremely responsive, thoughtful, and kind. We can’t wait for another visit."

"Absolutely one of my top AirBnB experiences! Clayton and Ashley are the most gracious hosts. Beautiful property with great access to the river. We spent a lot of time just hanging out in the river during the heat of the day. Also enjoyed the fire pit and the grill. Clayton even provided us with great firewood. The cabin has beautiful decor and furniture with rough sawn lumbar right from the property itself lining the inside walls and ceiling! We slept so well on the very comfortable beds. The towels and washcloths were very soft and it was so nice having bath products provided. Kitchen is very well stocked with nice utensils and cookware. Again, Clayton and Ashley were very responsive to any requests or questions and were so warm and inviting. We felt so welcome!! Will definitely be returning to this peaceful riverside paradise!!"

"Five Stars! We booked this cabin on a whim to celebrate my birthday. It was AMAZING!! Better than the pictures! It is so beautiful and comfortable and well appointed. Plus it smells like heaven inside. The hosts have thought of everything and you can tell they put so much of themselves into the cabin. The bed was comfortable, the living room relaxing and kitchen cozy. This place even has a whole house, indoor/outdoor sound system you can hook up to by Bluetooth. If you have any doubts, DO NOT!! Worth every penny, including the trip all the way from Detroit. The surrounding countryside is gorgeous and we had tons of fun checking out the wineries. Next time we’ll bring the kids, too!"
